BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India created by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act of 2016, a part of the Indian Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. BIS has been involved with many activities such as Standards Formulation and product Certification, Testing, Training Services, Hallmarking, Laboratory Services Calibration Schemes, and more. The BIS registration serves as an independent assurance of product safety, quality, and reliability.

The Bureau of Indian Standards grants licenses to manufacturers for their products that are listed in BIS's voluntary and mandatory certification programs. Manufacturers can use the standard marking on their products following the issuance of the license from BIS. Although acquiring a BIS license is optional, the Indian government has made certain items necessary to preserve the environment, public health, national security, and the well-being of people, animals, and plants. It also seeks to prevent unfair trading practices.
